LANGUAGE AS MARK
On the TEXT Works of Dominic J. Lopez
Language becomes mark.
A mark becomes direction.

The TEXT works form a parallel body of language inside my studio practice. The poems are written alongside the paintings. They are not captions and they are not explanations. They function the way marks function on canvas. Words become material. Each line is placed with weight, direction, and pause.
Individually a poem reads like a short transmission. Together the works form a field of thought. Twenty one poems now sit inside the sequence. They begin to reveal a vocabulary that mirrors the structure of the paintings. Direct gestures. Compressed symbols. Meaning carried as much by silence as by statement.
The language remains spare and declarative. Lines arrive as short statements rather than description. The restraint is deliberate. In the same way a brushstroke can carry pressure and intention, a line of text can do the same. The poems behave like marks. Each phrase lands and leaves space around it.
Navigation runs through the body of work. Early pieces move through uncertainty. Paths. Fields. Systems of accountability. Environments that must be read rather than controlled. The speaker moves through structures of expectation while trying to maintain integrity.
From there the poems widen into relationship. Works such as C’est Vous, Chateau Light, and When Its Sacred introduce intimacy and devotion. These pieces acknowledge tenderness. Love and attachment operate as forces equal to ambition or strategy. The terrain being navigated is emotional as well as structural.
The series then turns toward power and agency. Empress in a Wet Dress, Fallen King, and Autonomous examine visibility, consequence, and leadership. These works observe how influence circulates through culture while asking a direct question:
Who is actually steering the course?

Later poems move toward philosophy. Bushido proposes the idea of a personal code. Set Me Free and Dichotomous explore liberation and polarity. Bubbles introduces a moment of simplicity. Red Maze adds patience to the sequence. Some systems resolve only after pressure is released.
Near the end of the series Bridging the Gap becomes a threshold. The poem describes the quiet step forward. Reflection gives way to action. After navigating systems, relationships, and codes, the voice decides to cross.
The final gesture, 22/7 or π, refuses closure. Instead it expands the horizon. Infinity replaces conclusion. The inquiry continues.
Taken together the poems suggest a life made of crossings. Paths are chosen. Fields are navigated. Codes are adopted. Relationships are held sacred. Eventually the journey opens again toward the unknown.
What these works reveal is that my studio practice does not end at the surface of a painting. The same impulses present in the visual work appear in the writing. Symbolic language. Stark gestures. A balance between chaos and clarity.
Many artists write, but the writing often sits outside the work. In the TEXT series language and image grow from the same instinct. Each poem becomes another mark inside the same composition.
The paintings speak through gesture and symbol. The poems speak through breath and thought. Together they suggest that the studio is not a fixed place. It is an ongoing act of crossing. One mark. One line. One step forward.

The One Walking
Can you see a way through
my body bruised
black and blue
a tram line
or snow falling
through pine
dark gathers
light finds a seam
you ask for direction
from who
it is the one walking
the path is you

Held to Account

Le Café Marly
I do it for the moments
the ones that demand everything
for the souls
who look at you
and do not blink
along the path
they are the mirror
you cannot turn away
across the courtyard
the pyramid holds the sky
as if light itself were weight
and here
with coffee gone cold
I understand
this is not leisure
I am laying my life
on the line
for this
for the love
of craft
for the romance
that does not promise safety
the stone keeps the day’s last heat
long after the sun is gone
no applause
no certainty
only the work
returning
again
it tests me
Oh, it tests me
and still
I stay

Remembering Sunlight

Black and white
the mind draws its walls
names them truth
calls them the world
and still I am free
In captivity
and still I am free
because the spirit remembers the sunlight
not the borders we make
not the arguments of black and white
something older than the mind
something that never learned to divide
and in that light

the spirit remembers

it was never in captivity

but the heart can
the art of letting go
basking in the light
back to life
empty hands

Falling for Your Soul

Falling for your soul
is my only chance at wisdom
the pursuit
is the only thing
that refused my pretending
all this time
the way I loved myself
was rehearsal
it’s you
it’s always you
and when the road shifted
we paved another
even in rain
a source of counsel
a lover
the nearest shape of the divine
where else
does understanding live
if not between
your heart and mine
a tree of life
a child
who does not yet know
what darkness costs
wisdom stretches out her hand
and I reach

the sun
the road
God's place
the PCH
your face

When I look into those eyes
innocence and joy running loose
something that was never meant
to return
the dance of life
already choreographed

love a dangerous rodeo
only the wind between us
the gate opens

Dichotomous

Acrylic on canvas, diptych
12 x 24 in (30 x 61 cm)

Uncommon Dialogue

Black and white
or the quiet portion of each
living inside the other
we speak as if the world
must divide itself
to be understood
yet every boundary
leans toward conversation
an uncommon dialogue
beneath the surface
of what we think we see
existence slowly uncovering
layer after layer
until the difference
between one way and another
begins to dissolve
and we notice
what we called opposite
was only the mind
searching for balance
each path
merely another turn
in the same mystery
learning how to reveal itself

beautiful baby
its going
to solve
itself

Today is the Day

Bridging the gap
zero to one
a to b

no crowd
just the step
how to love
a message from above

carried in light
the lonely road
solitary
long miles of silence
between trees
honeysuckle
juneberries
summer breathing
through leaves
the only way through
is the shine
a narrow opening
in the mind
grand jeté
a leap of faith
air beneath the step
creating room
the debut
a clearing in the field
stay golden sunny boy
today is the day

22/7

close
but how close is close
a lifetime of irrational travel
every step a fraction of something greater
every turn a repetition that never ends
strap in beautiful baby
